Which is Better, a Manual or An Electric Toothbrush?

Dental Shop Staff Writer | June 3, 2021

Oral health is highly important, as it has an effect on your overall health. This means that choosing the correct toothbrush is also highly important. As more companies produce electric toothbrushes, more people begin to wonder, is my manual toothbrush doing enough? It probably isn’t, as it has been found that electric toothbrushes do a far better job at cleaning your teeth, gums, and tongue. This leads to healthier teeth and gums, as well as a decrease in tooth decay and bad bacteria in the mouth. Bad bacteria in the mouth can lead to issues not only orally, but also throughout the rest of your body.

Many doctors and dentists recommend the use of an electric toothbrush, especially for children and those with any motor disability or arthritis. As more companies have begun to produce electric toothbrushes, the cost to purchase one has dropped to as low as $30. Overall, the short-term and long-term effects of switching to an electric toothbrush far outweigh the increased initial cost.

Pros of Electric Toothbrushes

  • Cleans teeth, gums, and tongue better than a manual brush
  • Decreases tooth decay
  • Decreases harmful bacteria
  • Can help those with motor disabilities

Which Electric Toothbrush is the Best?

Since we have determined that electric toothbrushes are superior to manual toothbrushes, we can look at which electric toothbrush is the best. Although it will likely come down to personal preference, these three electric toothbrushes were rated as the best through trial. The toothbrush rated #1 overall is the Oral-B Pro 1000. It has a base cost of $50 with an overall three-year cost of $110, which factors in replacement heads and handles. The second highest-rated option is the Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 4100. It has a base cost of $50 as well, but a three-year cost of $149. The third best-rated was the Pro-Sys VarioSonic Electric Toothbrush, with an original cost of $80. Although the Pro-Sys is more expensive and from a lesser-known company, it still does a fantastic job of keeping your mouth clean. Each of these three electric toothbrushes is a great option and will do a better job at cleaning your teeth, gums, and tongue than any manual toothbrush alternative.
